Trade Missions
The Association has been active in assisting members to secure export markets through participation in trade missions and fairs in the Caribbean and other markets, leading to earning of valuable foreign exchange for the companies and by extension the Jamaican economy.
In 2005, members participated in the 23rd Havana International Trade Fair (FIHAV 2005) in Cuba and the Caribbean Gift and Craft Show in Barbados. The JMA also collaborated with JAMPRO and the Jamaica Exporters Association (JEA) on a Trade Mission/Island Hop to Five (5) Caribbean Islands in May 2005. The islands visited were Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Grenada, St. Lucia, Antigua and Barbuda. A delegation of twenty-one (21) persons representing eighteen (18) companies participated and the JMA represented five (5) of its member companies. The Trade Mission was dubbed “Jamaica’s Reggae Train” and took the form of exhibition of products and one-on-one meetings in each island. Consortia funding was provided by the Private Sector Development Programme (PSDP) administered by JAMPRO. Companies secured contracts to the tune of US$ 514, 600.
Under the aegis of the “Buy Jamaican” Campaign and its thrust to promote “Brand Jamaica” in the international marketplace, the JMA coordinated Jamaica’s first participation in the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters (CME) Annual Conference and Trade Show in Toronto, Canada in June 2005. Approximately eight (8) companies participated and the JMA represented four (4) manufacturers. The Association secured consortia funding for members’ participation in the trade show from the European Union’s PSDP implemented by JAMPRO. A number of the companies which participated received valuable trade leads.
The JMA also partnered with the Jamaica USA Chamber of Commerce (JAUSACC) in May 2007 for the first staging of the trade exposition in Florida, the Jamaican Business Expo, supported by the National Commercial Bank, the Jamaica Public Service and PSDP. The Jamaican Business Expo provides an excellent opportunity to strengthen trade relations between the United States and Jamaica, by promoting the value-added products that Jamaica has to offer. The Expo also provides a forum for showcasing the wealth of goods and services available in Jamaica and for forging vital links with the Diaspora. The second staging of the Expo took place from May 29-30, 2008 under the theme, ‘Buy Jamaican – Brand We Love’.
