THE Jamaica Manufacturers’ Association (JMA) says it is deeply disturbed by the confusion that has been created within the beverage sub-sector regarding the reintroduction of the Special Consumption Tax (SCT) on energy drinks.
“The JMA is disappointed with these developments, which boils down to lack of inclusion and consultation with the business community and membership associations,” the group said in a statement today. “The Government’s impulsive and ad hoc approach in announcing new taxes on energy drinks has caused confusion, distractions and loss of productive time.”
“It is important that we all work together to stimulate production and grow the economy, but this must start with the building of trust between the private and public sector,” the JMA said.
Minister with responsibility for Information, Telecommunications and Special Projects Daryl Vaz said that the definition of "energy drink" would be determined by the Ministry of Health and would depend on the list of ingredients contained including herbs, amino acids and may include caffeine.
According to Vaz, the organisations involved in the distribution of these drinks had been included in the discussions on the tax increase.
