Essay Competition

In 2004, the Jamaica Manufacturers’ Association Ltd. (JMA) launched the ‘Buy Jamaican…Build Jamaica’ Campaign, with the intention of “taking back the home market”.  The main pillars of the campaign were focused on growth, visibility and sustainability. The campaign therefore employed strategies for the development of policies that would facilitate growth in the sector as well as a promotional programme to spread the message both nationally and internationally of the wide range of quality products manufactured locally.

Getting youths more involved in the Buy Jamaican initiative

The Buy Jamaican Essay Competition was launched in October 2004 and was a tactical approach on the part of the Association to sensitize and engage the younger population to the necessity of nation building for prosperity. The competition was successful with scores of entries received from schools islandwide and independently.

The Buy Jamaican Essay Competition was comprised of four categories, the 8-11, 12-15, 16-18 and the 19 and over age groups. The entrants were evaluated on scales that were devised for the different categories and levels of competence expected. At the Buy Jamaican Essay Competition in 2004, the prizes comprised of cash incentives, computers, plaques and the Buy Jamaican Scholarship.

On October 31, 2006 the Association with support from the National Commercial Bank (NCB) and the Private Sector Development Programme (PSDP) launched the 2006 Buy Jamaican Essay Competition. It was again well supported by schools islandwide.

The main goal of the Essay Competition is to increase the awareness of the youths to the importance of supporting Jamaican products and services.
